How to Decorate the Perfect Cupcake [Tutorial]

How to decorate the perfect bread style cupcake

Freezing a cupcake can be a little scary if you've never done it before. Let me tell you that it's not as difficult as you think. There are 3 main factors for freezing cupcakes: pressure, position, movement, and of course good freezing! With a little practice and the right tools, anyone can do it. That's right, you can learn how to decorate the perfect cupcake!

On Monday I hand out my Perfect Vanilla Buttercream. It is shaken to perfection and full of flavor! I think this piping tutorial is worthy of its own posts, but this is the recipe for frosting that I used in this post. Scroll to the bottom of this post for more recipes!

What I found most helpful to me was using a large pipe bag. I use 18 pos Disposable Pastry Bag. First of all, a large pipe bag allows you to put all the decorations in the bag without having to refill, because it becomes messy.
After filling it, put it flat and push all the frosting under the bag and try leaving the remaining air bubbles. Turn the end of the bag closed. Sometimes it helps to put a rubber band around it. I like to use Wilton Icing Bag Ties, but rubber bands also work!

Notice in the photo above that I cut the pipe bag very close to the tip, which helps prevent freezing from bursting from the bottom of the bag. Nobody likes that. Make sure you cut it high enough so that it doesn't block one of the points at the end of the pipe.

In order to have a consistent shape, you need consistent pressure on the bag. Larger piping bags allow you enough space to hold the bag both at the top and above the tip of the piping, which is the key to being able to put the same pressure on the bag. Larger pockets are usually more sturdy which are important when full of freezing!

When positioning the piping bag, you should put your hand on the cupcake and hold it at a 90 degree angle. Position the tip on the cupcake and stir it from the outside when you lift the bag.

When I started making cupcakes, I was frustrated because the piping tips didn't produce the same results that I found in cupcake shops and blogs that I followed. I read different posts about baking pipes and everyone talked about big pipe tips. I bought some of these piping tips and let me tell you that it changed my life.

If you don't live near a cake supply store, they may be hard to find. Your local craft shop may carry some items and of course you can buy them online. I would recommend buying Ateco 6-Piece Pastry Tube and Tips Set as the starting place. If you don't need it all 6, I include a link to each of the piping tips that I use below. For some of my favorites, I brought two.
